Cortinarius variecolor Fr. subgenus Phlegmacium Cap 5-13cm across, convex; a mixture of violet and pale rusty red; glutinous specially at first, later it may become dry. Gills adnate; violet to pallid clay at first, then more rusty. Stem 50-120 x 10-18mm, base swollen to clavate; violet. Flesh whitish with patches of violet, or more brownish when old and wet. Odor sweetish, pleasant. Taste mild. Spores almond- to lemon-shaped, warty, 8.5-11.6 x 5-6.5µ, rather variable in size, quotient 1.75. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat under conifers. Occasional. Found in the Pacific Northwest and possibly other areas. Season October-November. Not edible. Comment With KOH the flesh goes yellow. |
